Cross for New Prayer Space

Cross for New Prayer Space

At the request of some staff, CatholicCare is developing a prayer space at Mamre.  We have a beautiful cross which we wanted to place in the room but because it is a heritage building we cannot put anything  on the wall so the plan was to find a way to have the cross standing without toppling over.

Men’s Shed to the rescue!  One of the members of the St Clair Men’s Shed whose base is at Mamre is very gifted with his hands. A retired mechanical engineer, he has turned his talents to woodwork. As he says ‘wood is more forgiving than metal!’

Joe fashioned a stand for the Cross from the bark of tree. Naturally gnarled it provides a beautiful base which gives continuity of medium and allows us to speak of the ‘wood of the cross’.

Very many thanks to Joe for so generously sharing his gift and love of wood carving with us.
